This playhouse hack was one of my favorite projects that we have done. It took us a while to finish it because of the holidays and birthdays, but we finally got it done! We purchased this Backyard Discovery Timberlake Cedar Wooden Playhouse from Walmart when it was on sale for $159.
For the paint, we used Behr Polar Bear White exterior and used a paint sprayer to apply it. The roof was Rust-Oleum in semi-gloss black. For the door we painted that by hand and used a paint that we already had lying around. It was Folk Art chalk paint in Sea Side Villa which we got at Michael’s. We assembled the house before painting except for the roof and the door. We painted those separately by hand.
The outdoor light fixture on the front of the house has a little puck light in it so no wiring! I got the idea from Nesting with Grace. Brilliant idea and the kids love to turn it on and off themselves. The shelves and brackets we got were from IKEA but the shelves did not hold up very well. We got a decent amount of rain the following weeks after we added the shelves, and they started to peel. So my husband built new shelves to replace the IKEA ones and they have held up much better. Below I have links to all the extras we added on including the original IKEA shelves.
Here is a picture of what it looked like before, followed by pictures of it now that it’s done. We are so happy with how it turned out and the kids are really loving it.

Hi! I ordered this house today and then canceled bc I am scared my y’all 20m old May be too big. But your children look so comfy. My baby is about 3ft tall. Will this be too short a house?

I think it will be fine! It is a smaller playhouse but both my kids play in it together and have plenty of room. My daughter is turning 4 and she still plays in it constantly. We have looked at the playhouse Costco has and it definitely is bigger but so is the price! I guess it just depends on how much you want to spend. But I’d say this one would be fine for your little one. 🙂

Did you guys paint before or after putting it together?
And did I see that you re-hardwared the door too?

We painted before we put it together and yes my husband put new hinges on the door so it would open and close better.

Hi
Krystal,
I was truly inspired by your design. I found the exact play house on Facebook Market 🙌. So I was so happy. I can’t wait to style her home. Will post photos upon completion.

Or if you are talking about the bracket that the plant is hanging from, that’s from Home Depot.
